A PRISON WITHOUT WALL
BFA THESIS
BFA THESIS
I am exploring the phenomenon of people using too many “passes” to get exchange or proof of violence, power, authenticity, priority in our current society, especially during the pandemic. It could be seen as everyone needs a “pass” to officially participate in human society. This judgment of whether or not a person has some sort of qualification to participate in a group activity based on whether or not they have a pass is also in some ways a cruel form of binary thinking. The binary thinking in power regulations even influences people to further police their peers autonomously. Sometimes people’s personalities are easily dismissed by the masses and public opinion because they do not hold a certain pass. However, it is hard for people to realize that they are actually in this invisible power system, which is creating a situation of binary opposition eliminating their empathy.
Investigation
I looked through the role of different passes, like “paper tickets/barcode/QR code/identity card/food stamp/certification...”, or even some “invisible/atypical tickets” like “dress code/social standards/...” and their functions to explore how they define and deny people’s personalities under a larger system’s domination. I would like to conduct interviews with people who experienced being rejected by the “passing” system to refine the possible issues people might encounter.
